Cave Care While Exploring

Thursday 22 February 2007 @ 10:34 pm

Cave exploration is a fun and educational activity. If you are interested in spelunking (or recreational cave exploring), however, you need to have a good grasp of the basics of cave exploration. Here are some tips that will help you safely enjoy your underground escapade:

Inform someone about your trip

You need to tell your friends or family about your caving trip. Tell them when you are leaving and when you are expected to be back and who are you with. Provide them with directions or a map to where you are going.

Don’t go alone

Even professional cavers know that it is unwise to go spelunking alone. Cave exploration is very dangerous, so you need to go with at least two people, particularly experienced spelunkers if you are new to the activity.

Cave exploring has become a favorite adventure activity for many Americans. When it comes to spelunking, you don’t need to go far because the United States is home to some of the world’s well-formed caves. No wonder caves all over the country have been transformed into mesmerizing tourist spots.

If you are just starting out with your spelunking pursuit, the central region of the country is the best place to explore caves. Of the top ten caves in the United States, four are located in this region. Exploring these caves is indeed well worth the journey.

You can start from up north in Minnesota. The Niagara Cave found here has a ceiling that is over a hundred feet in height. It is characterized with deep walls and ravines below. It is believed that the cavern has been carved out by subterranean streams; with some still active to this day. The cave is one of the region’s biggest limestone caves.

Always Be Prepared For These Animals When Cave Exploring

Wednesday 14 February 2007 @ 12:58 am

The dark and damp chambers of a cave serve as home to a number of creatures that can be both creepy and crawly. Some animals are accustomed to go inside caves just to rest or hibernate; while others are true blue dwellers that can’t survive outside the caves. No matter how big a cave is, it is a universe to countless animals that can be delicate or dangerous, minuscule or gargantuan.

Getting into caves could be the ultimate adventure for you. But such activity can present dangers that lurk in the dark. Living creatures can suddenly catch you off guard and bring you an itch or, worse, death. So be prepared for these animals when cave exploring.

Bats dwell inside caves to hide from the light of day. A little disturbance can surely awaken them and before you know it, hundreds or thousands of panic-stricken bats will be flying your way and you can easily get caught in the rush. With razor sharp teeth and claws, bats can rip your cave apparel or your skin. If this happens, watch your eyes or you will live in darkness forever.

If you are one of those who like to flirt with danger or study this mysterious type of land formation, you might want to explore advanced cave exploration areas. The following are caving specializations for extreme spelunkers:

Vertical Caving

Many caves have huge vertical drops, sometimes thousands of meters deep, which can only be accessible through rope work. To be able to explore such caves, you need vertical cave training and equipment.
