Thursday 1 March 2007 @ 1:08 am

Metal detecting can be a great hobby, but it can also be one remarkable source of income.

The beach is one of the favorite spots for people who are into metal detecting. Not only are they able to obtain rare metals but they can also enjoy the lovely atmosphere in the beach.

With the soft, damp sand along the beach, finding different kinds of metals can be enjoyable. It is more like having fun than finding treasures even if there are not so many finds after a hard day’s metal detecting activity. Just getting the sand beneath your feet, rumbling waves along the seashore, and the beautiful scenery in the area is worth more than what treasures of gold and silver can bring.

Civil War Bullet Collecting

Sunday 18 February 2007 @ 2:56 am

A Hobby that Honors the Past

Did you know that during the Civil War, more than 1000 different types of bullets were used?  This is one reason Civil War bullet collecting has become a popular hobby.  Another reason is that the time of the Civil War saw changes taking place in the development of firearms and ammunition.  The old round musketballs of the Revolution were being replaced with bullets in the shape we are accustomed to.  While musketballs are found on Civil War battlefields, the most common type of bullet used was the .58-caliber bullet with three rings around the base.  Many bullets found are splattered out of shape.  If you’ve always been fascinated by the Civil War and firearms, Civil War bullet collecting is a hobby you will enjoy.

With the advent of Internet buying and selling, Civil War bullets have become more collectible, and the prices have gone up quickly.  Not only this, sometimes sellers are not informed and ask more than the bullet is worth.  For these reasons, if you are just starting out in Civil War bullet collecting, you will want to buy a good price guide.  You can even find a price guide online if that works better for you.

Tips on Beach Metal Detecting and Beach Metal Gadgets

Sunday 28 January 2007 @ 12:57 am

Metal detecting gadgets have been around for hundreds of years but were just perfected recently. With minor opportunities for improvement, metal detectors used in conjunction with a beach metal detector are a perfect tool for use in marine biology and for general boating purposes.

What exactly does a beach metal detector do? Beach metal detectors work specifically the same way as an ordinary metal detector just on a different media, that is, water. While the water is the primary consideration in the function of the beach metal detector, the water content is also another thing that should also be considered.

It is generally true that beach or salt water contains electrolytic substances (components of salt: sodium and chlorine).  The beach metal detecting gadget should work on selectively identifying true metals and metallic substances and non-metallic elements.

Metal Detecting Ethics

Golden Rules to Observe During Metal Detecting

Metal detecting is a fun hobby to have…but it’s a hobby that can easily place you under arrest (with bail, don’t worry) or the object of people’s rage. To avoid both unfavorable consequences, keep in mind the following tips on metal detecting ethics:

ALWAYS ASK PERMISSION
Even if you personally know the landowner and are certain that the landowner is the generous and forgiving type, it’s still important to obtain proper permission before letting your metal detector do its work. To safeguard both of your interests as well, a written consent is better than mere verbal sanction.

Supplies used in metal detecting

Sunday 10 December 2006 @ 11:38 pm

The basic definition of conducting deep metal detecting work is when masses of objects or metals that are buried are found anywhere between forty centimeters to three meters just below the surface.

Any other investigations that require depths that are greater than mentioned would then require a significant amount of equipment that is expensive and highly specialized.

The following are equipment and supplies commonly used in metal detection.

One exciting moment for metal detectors is the challenge of discovering valuable finds on difficult grounds like the beach sand. This hunt, because of its distinct features, is labeled “beach combing.”

Most enthusiasts take on the challenge and go for a wild goose search on the sand. It is important to consider the time you go on your metal detecting spree. For this area, it is best that you do it very early in the morning or in the evenings. Be sure to also check the laws in the areas where you choose to do your metal detecting because some require a permit to do metal detecting on the beach or water.
